Pakucho Cotton - The Organic Ancient Fiber

What is Pakucho Cotton. Image of hands holing multicolored raw organic native cotton.

Pakucho cotton comes from the Quechua Incan word for brown cotton. It is an ancient fiber that has been harvested for over 3,000 years!

In the early seventies, American anthropologist, James Vreeland, was studying pre-Columbian textiles in Lima. After meeting with locals to learn more about multicolored fibers he had found, Vreeland realized he had uncovered a natural-dyeing phenomena that had been used in cotton farming by Peruvians for centuries.

In 1983, Vreeland and his team initiated more field research, focusing heavily on the native, color grown cotton. They were able to produce in an extraordinary range of natural colors: earthy beige, brown, chocolate, green and mauve.

In 1997, deciding it was time to bring their cloth to the modern world, Naturtex was formed!

At Pan American Apparel, we use Global Organic Textile Standard and Fair Trade certified Pakucho cotton harvested and processed by Naturtex in Peru. These cottons naturally grow in the colors you see, so there's no dye at all.

Pakucho Fabric: Sustainable Fashion

Our collection of Organic Peruvian Native Cotton is handmade for Pan American Apparel in small batches.

We have a variety of Pakucho cotton apparel that will elevate your little one's wardrobe. This organic fabric is hypoallergenic, breathable, cool and super soft to the touch.

Comfortable, gender neutral, roomy fits will help this wardrobe last and easily be passed down to younger siblings.

The Amazing Benefits!

The fabric is undyed, which means that the colors you see are the natural pigments of the harvested cotton. No dyes equals no runoff and no water used for dyeing. Safer for the environment!

Hypoallergenic- Organic and undyed also means this fabric is less processed and as raw and natural as possible. Fewer processes and chemicals means less irritants and the safest fabric for your little one's sensitive skin.

Comfortable, gender neutral, roomy fits will help this wardrobe last and easily be passed down to younger siblings.

Beautifully designed. Thoughtfully made. Brought fair trade to your little one.

We are proud of our partnership with Child's Way of Peru. With their help, we are directly supporting biodiversity and the amazing heritage of native cottons. These native, ancient heritage varieties of cotton were almost lost to industrialization, and the popularity of the quick and easy white cotton.

Thank you for supporting Pakucho Cotton!
